The bags line the track and sometimes, if there are enough, are used to spell out a word, such as HOPE. A candle is placed inside the bag and lit when the ceremony is about to begin. You purchase a bag, write the person’s name that you are honoring on it and decorate however you want. However, while this ceremony honors both, it is targeted towards remembering those lost. The members of the community surround the survivors at the starting line to show their support and the survivors make the first lap to start off the event.Īt every event, participants remember those that have lost their battle to cancer and celebrate the survivors. After the dinner all survivors and their caretakers head out to the track to begin the event. All survivors and their caretakers are invited to a catered dinner prior to the event that is donated by a local restaurant and served by volunteers. There are three important features to a Relay for Life event: the survivor dinner and lap, the luminaria ceremony, and the fight back ceremony.Ī cancer survivor, according to the American Cancer Society, is anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer. The mission for these events is to raise funds to improve cancer survival rates, decrease the incidence of cancer, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caretakers.Ī volunteer committee undertakes the majority, if not all, of the planning for each event. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society will host the 9th Annual On the Move Luncheon at the Ritz-Carlton Dallas on Friday, November 13th, from 11:00am to 1:00pm.
There are walks and rides happening throughout the year as well as other events such as The Dallas On The Move Luncheon.
Fundraising walks have been going on since 1988 and to date have raised more than $870 million to support life changing programs and cutting-edge research. The National MS Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.
